Big screens, low seats

Game rooms favor large screens and low seating, and both change the math. A 65- to 85-inch set weighs enough that the plate spans two studs, and a lower seat means a lower center of the screen than in a living room.

Screen Typical wall load Plate
50–65 in Moderate Two-stud plate
66–85 in Heavy Two-stud plate or backer board
86 in and up Very heavy Backer board across three or more studs

Converted garages, dens and bonus rooms

Converted garages often have new drywall on old framing, so the studs are proved before the plate is placed. A bonus room over the garage is usually ordinary drywall over studs with sloped ceilings at the edges, which keeps the TV on the straight wall.

A backer board spreads the load of a very large set across more wood than a plate alone.

Taming console wires

Consoles and receivers need HDMI and power at the shelf. Cables go in a raceway behind the shelf, and HDMI is CL3-rated if it runs inside a wall. Standard power cords are never run in a wall.

Sound and glare

A soundbar on its own bracket below the screen suits most rooms, and window glare is managed with a tilt or a different wall. Surround speakers and subwoofers are placed by the owner.

Game Room TV Mounting — common questions

Does a 75-inch TV need special mounting?

It needs a mount rated well above its weight and a plate across at least two studs, with a backer board when the layout asks for one.

Where does the console go?

On a shelf below the screen with a short raceway behind it. The outlet already in the wall powers everything.
